The Current State of US Air Travel in 2019: This is the ebook version and it is offered as part of the historical record (periodically updated)

Abstract

The current state of US Air Travel is not good. Everyone knows this yet nothing is happening to correct the situation. The decline in US Air Travel has taken decades but now we have reached a point where the system is in serious trouble. This report takes a systems perspective and reports on the condition of the US Air Travel Transportation System, how we may have arrived at this point and then offers potential suggestions for moving forward in a positive direction.

Introduction

The US Air Transportation System consists of two extremely large systems:

  1. Air Travel Transportation System
  2. Air Traffic Control System (ATC)

Many view the Air Transportation System from the perspective of the ATC system suggesting that it somehow impacts the Travel portion of the system. However the Travel portion of the system is separate and distinct from the ATC portion of the system. This paper will take a systems perspective and report on the condition of the US Air Travel Transportation system. It will identify some history, suggest how we may have arrived at this point and then offer potential suggestions for moving forward in a positive direction.
