We were associated with a number of dot-com failures this year. They all ran their associates program via third party vendors. Coincidentally they never paid us event though we provided hundreds of thousands of impressions. Many of these companies were a second set that we placed on our site. The first set never provided revenue. The second set was selected based primarily on the look of the advertising and the product, with no expectation of sales.
Probably the biggest dot-com failure was Poincast. Pointcast had many partners that invested heavily in their model. All those partners were essentially devastated. A search for pointcast on any search engine reveals a wasteland of abandoned web sites similar to abandoned factories in the rust belt. Pointcast was eventually purchased by entrypoint and entrypoint was eventually purchased by infogate.com. Poincast was based on push technology, rather than pull. Its problems started when Rupert Murdoch offered $600+ million to purchase Pointcast and they refused. Shortly after, there was a flurry of stories that push technology is a waste of bandwidth and companies started barring the application from their networks. The rest is history.

A while ago I sent an e-mail to someone where I talked about developing systems, technology, and stuff. It was centered around the idea of developing technology based on user requests or developing technology for the sake of technology and letting the people figure out what to do with it once the genie is released from the bottle. I then proceeded to state that I thought the Internet was an example of the second alternative - technology for technologies sake and let normal people figure out how to use it once released. Here it is:
The way I see it, there are 4 alternatives, which I will describe by
depersonalizing this stuff. Lets say you could go back a few thousand years
and drop off a "wheel" with tribes around the planet. Don't let yourself
be seen, just dump a wheel in a field near a tribes camp. After a brief period
of time I would speculate that you would start to see a pattern.
(1) The first group of tribes might notice something strange in the field or they might not. In any case they would ignore it and go about their caveman way of life. Yes there are brain dead companies out there, I know first hand... (2) The second group of tribes would be terrified of this thing and order everyone to stay away from it. In fact the elders would probably put anyone to death if they approached it... curiously only young cave people would approach this wheel thing and attempt to play with it, shortly followed by an elder "witch hunt". Needless to say the tribe would eventually die off due to lack of young cave people. (3) The third group would have the priests take over the wheel. They would use it to move their offerings around in their caves and sacrifice anyone who would attempt to use the wheel. Eventually these tribes would only consist of priests, and since priests don't do anything, they would starve to death and the tribe would vanish. (4) The forth group would have wagons, wheel barrows, and hang wheels on walls and around their necks, just for the heck of it. Now that they have leisure time, thanks to the wheel, they would approach the tribes in the first group and say, "hey, this is a wheel". There you have it. My response to this Internet thing... walt |
